SPANNER

has a passion for the outdoors and the self sufficiency life skills role. He joined the Army in 1968 being promoted through the ranks until his discharge in 2002 as a Major.


During that time he served all over the world including Canada, New Zealand, Falkland Islands, and Demark. However it’s in the Rainforest that he really excels. Working in the jungles of Belize, Kenya, and in particular Brunei where he spent over 3 years as a jungle warfare instructor. He has spent the last 20 years teaching survival techniques to all arms of the services.

He was awarded the MBE in 1993 for his work with youngsters in Northern Ireland. His infectious enthusiasm when working with young people irrespective of their background has produced results that has left their adult supervisors astounded. He believes that to learn new life skill techniques, there must be an element of fun and people should be prepared through knowledge to deal with all situations.

Mark Sainsbury

MARK SAINSBURY

has spent the last 23 years serving in the British Army with a year sabbatical spent employed as a prisoner officer. Mark left the Army in 2007. Since then he has worked at Duchy College and with Footsteps, he took over as Co director in Aug 2009.


He has worked closely with many youth groups including the Prince's Trust and Education to Employment groups and has worked for a number of outward bound companies teaching Management, Leadership and Basic Survival skills. He has an in depth knowledge of creating training programme’s and tailoring them to suit the individual and group needs. He is an experienced trainer who can teach assess and debrief on a variety of subjects. He can offer a vast amount of experience in many fields. Navigation, First aid, Briefings, Basic Survival, Mine awareness, Weapon safety, Administration support to oversea deployments, Personal hygiene, Personal security, Surveillance and Communication skills with and without interpreters. He has first hand experience in West, and East Africa, North America and Central Europe. He has worked in Iraq and has experienced all extremes of environments and weather conditions. He has been involved in planning and executing numerous training exercises and operational deployments.

Adrian Couzens

ADRIAN COUZENS (KP)

left the Army in 2005. Over the years he has worked with numerous youth groups and organisations including two years specializing with inner city young students from London.


He has worked extensively and has a depth of experience in the Duke of Edinburgh award schemes.

During KPs Army service he has worked in most hazardous of environments including time served in the Jungle and the Desert. He has also gained experience in outdoor living skills during his numerous tours in America, Canada and main land Europe.

Adrian is a skilled instructor with a vast amount of experience; couple this with his fantastic dry sense of humour, makes KP an asset to the team at Footsteps of Discovery. He works well with both children and adults and is keen to pass on his vast experience. He believes that knowledge through experience will in the end save the day.

Ben Whitehouse

BEN WHITEHOUSE

Ben was born in Cornwall, and is a real board man who has a keen interest in surfing and snowboarding; in addition he is also active in SCUBA diving and quad racing.


He is a fit member of the Footsteps team who regularly participates in Muliti terrain long distance running events, including the London Marathon. He has travelled the world and picked up many indigenous Survival & Bushcraft skills from Southeast Asia, Australian outback, and various countries in Eastern Europe.

Ben has served the last 16 years, as a member of the Territorial Army, and has been involved in training soldiers in the Ukraine, Georgia, Romania, and the USA he has also completed an operational tour of Afghanistan. He has instructed:  Schools, Colleges, and Army Cadets units from different backgrounds and ages in Survival & Bushcraft techniques.

Ross Burt

ROSS BURT

On leaving school Ross went into engineering, but never felt happy, and always wanted to learn about the outdoors and get involved in outdoor activities.


He is experience in fishing and hunting, and used his engineering skills to build an off-road truck, and to compete in 4x4 challenge events.

He has qualifications as a level one paddle sports coach, including Deer Stalking, and Tracking. His passion for the great outdoors has seen him on many voluntary events for the Forestry Commission, including Bushcraft Courses. Ross has in-depth knowledge of the Bushcraft subject, and is very keen to share it with others.

Leon Andrews

LEON ANDREWS

Leon Andrews has a wealth of outdoor experience. During his 13 years Regular Army service he

has served in many theatres including: Brunei, Canada, Cyprus, Kuwait, Kenya, Poland, The Falkland Islands and South Georgia. He is very keen on tracking and has completed a number of different courses, for his latest course he travelled to Namibia.


Leon has been involved in Survival & Bushcraft since leaving the Army in 1999, His main occupation has been teaching individuals and groups (both educational and corporate). His speciality is leather craft, whereupon his order book is worldwide. leon@greencraft.me.uk Within the team he is a strong player, and with his experience and knowledge has become the focal point for Survival & Bushcraft questions on the Footsteps of Discovery facebook forum. Leon teaches by engaging his students completely and is not content until the subject matters has been fully understood.

John Aberdeen

John Aberdeen

John is the senior member of the Footsteps team, and with him comes a great deal of experience, joining the Army at 15 as a Private Soldier and leaving in the rank of Major, has seen him serve all over the world.


This background along with his love of the great outdoors serves
him well, his role as the Cadet Executive Officer for the County of Cornwall, has given him an insight into how and what makes youngsters tick and how to get the best out of them. His main role, for which his reputation precedes him, is as the team Physical Training Instructor.


Specializing in the Boot Camp side of life, his Woodland Gymnasium, Log Run - Endurance Race and Battle PT are his area of expertise. John now in his 70th year, does practice his own fitness methods, and is living proof that his training works. He has also been involved in the physical training of show business personalities including the first female winner of the “Biggest Loser”
